Digital Video

ITS can assist with providing access to digital video instructional materials via the campus network. Such materials include films (documentary, feature, short subjects), television programs, and original materials (i.e. video shot and produced by faculty or students). For materials that are commercially available, we will only process videotapes or DVDs that are originals, not copies.

Pomona’s online Video on Demand server is at http://etv.pomona.edu

Academic usage has highest priority, followed by College administrative and co-curricular usage. Most usage of this service involves video clips or full length works to be provided to students in a particular class as part of their academic materials. IF the material is copyrighted, ITS requires that such material be restricted to the students in that class. We make every effort to provide one week turnaround service. Providing Instructional Services with materials as far in advance of the date materials are needed is very helpful.

We make every effort to make the digital videos easy to view by faculty and students in the appropriate classes on their own computers as well as in the ITS computer labs.

For best results, digital video presentations should be viewed on the Pomona College campus network, on a computer of recent vintage with one of the standard operating systems: Windows XP, or Macintosh OS X. The Safari browser tends to give the best results in OS X. Please also see our help page on Digital Video.

Requesting Online Video for Academic Use

Please fill out the Digital Video Service Request form. An ITS staff member will follow up within 2 business days of receipt of this request.

Please deliver the source video (VHS, DVD, or other format) to the ITS Help Desk 156 E. 7th St. Attn: ITG. Indicate any special requests such as whether to include subtitles if any are present.

All who make such requests must agree to abide by Pomona College’s copyright, fair use and intellectual property policies.

For events that are locally taped, a participant permission form must be signed by all participants.

We will not be able to provide online access to any material that would be longer than a full length work, i.e. typically 120 minutes or less.

Course materials will be available for the length of the relevant semester and then taken offline.

Explanation of key terms:

MPEG-2: Generally, high bit rate video that is DVD-quality or near. If the source video is of DVD quality, we will do our best to come close to that quality for online delivery. If the source video is less-than-DVD quality (i.e. a VHS, or smaller digital file), MPEG-2 encoding may not be warranted, and MPEG-4 encoding may be a better option.

MPEG-4:
a digital video format that offers good visual and audio quality with a relatively small file size.
