Luna Digital Image Collections

Luna Insight is a digital collections database, content management system and viewing platform at Pomona College. Luna allows you to create, manage and annotate digital images, create sub-collections, groups, and online presentations for use in research, teaching, and presentation to groups.

Accessing Luna

You can access Luna Insight with the “generic” Pomona Luna account username: luna password: luna. There are two ways to get to existing Luna resources: the Browser client which runs in your web browser at http://insight.pomona.edu), and the Java client available for download.

For Mac users, open “connect to server” ([apple key] + K) and enter the address:
smb://fargo3.pomona.edu/macsoftware/OS X/Applications/Design & Multimedia/Insight Clients/Insight5.5MacOSX

For PC users, go to Start, then Run and enter: \\CAMPUS.pomona.edu\pomona\software\PC-Software\Luna Insight 5.5
The advantages of using the Insight Browser are that there is no install required and it runs on any platform. The disadvantage is that it allows easy access only to local Pomona collections and you cannot access other institution’s collections.

The advantage of using the Java Client is that it gives access to all Pomona College local collections as well as collections from other institutions. For a full list of available public Luna Collections, see the list on the Luna website

The Java Luna client is installed on the lab and classroom computers in the IT building and the Hahn 204 classroom.

Using Luna Insight:

Searching

Each collection can be searched either by keywords, or by data fields particular to that collection.

Creating Groups

Most collections allow for the creation and saving of groups of images. You can also create URLs for use in your own course management system or web page.

Creating a Personal Insight Collection

Individuals can create small “personal” collections of images that use a simple label scheme. Such collections may be for personal use, or for teaching purposes, and will typically consist of dozens to perhaps 100 images. The Luna administrator must enable your account to create personal collections. If you wish to create your own collection on Pomona’s Luna server, please email sean.pollack@pomona.edu.

Creating a large “Institutional” Collection for Campus-wide Use

Institutional Collections are large scale collections that use standard metadata schemes (such as Dublin Core or VRA), and that are intended for campus-wide use in teaching, research, and presentation. Creating such a collection has a few steps which can take weeks or months, depending on the number of images.
