Info for Parents of Incoming Students

What to Bring

Each new student will receive a packet from ITS mailed out in July which will include a Welcome letter from ITS and the student’s computer account information. Please bring this packet to campus.

If the student is bringing a computer to campus, make sure they bring any CDs that came with the computer. To access the Internet from their dorm room, the student will also need an ethernet cable.

Technology Help on Move-In Day

Student technology consultants will be stationed at each of the first-year dorms during the first few days of move-in.

Computer Access

Most students bring their own computer to college, however this is not required. There are many computer labs on the Pomona campus which can provide anything that your freshman might need. Most labs provide extended hours, and some are available to students 24/7.

Computer Purchasing

The Helpdesk supports both Windows and Apple computers. Any computer manufactured within the last 5 years should be compatible with the campus network. For helpful information about buying a computer, see our Computer Buying Guide.

Computer Setup

Your student must register their computer to connect to the Pomona campus network. To find out how, see the Network Registration page

For information about configuring your student’s Pomona email account, see the Email Setup Instructions

Wireless Access

Pomona College is adding wireless to buildings as they are renovated, and at this point the wireless signal in dorms is not reliable. To get reliable network (Internet) access, your freshman must use an ethernet cable to plug his or her computer into the network jack located in their dorm room.

Wireless network access is available in most academic buildings as well as the Smith Campus Center.

For more information about setting up wireless access and wifi coverage at Pomona, see the Wireless Networking page.
