Students Abroad and Off Campus
Pomona ITS implements a number of services geared to enable students to access campus resources from off-campus.
Changing Passwords
Pomona College uses an online password reset service. Please go through the following steps before leaving campus. This will allow you to reset your password while abroad at any point without the help of ITS.
In order to use this service, please visit the https://mypassword.pomona.edu website. The first time you will be asked to login with your alpha-numeric user id, e.g. abc02004. You will then be prompted for your current password. You will then need to answer at least three of six questions, and/or input your own custom questions with answers. You can then reset your password. If you forget your password, the questions you filled out will be used the next time you login to this service to verify your identity. Setting your password with this site will reset your password for most services on the Pomona College network, such as lab, email, and userspace logons. (It will not change your password for the spam filtering service Postini.)
Connecting to On-Campus Resources
Terminal Server
A terminal server is available for faculty, staff, and students that need access to software that can only be installed [legally] on Pomona College owned computers. Connection to the terminal server will provide you with a virtual experience close to that of what you would see on a Windows lab/classroom computer.
With the terminal server, the following Pomona College owned software is available remotely to the Pomona College community [otherwise not available for installation on personally purchased computers]:
- Microsoft Office 2003 [Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc]
- Frontpage 2003
- Dreamweaver 8
- Adobe Acrobat Professional
- Endnote X
- Matlab 7.0.4
- Stata 10
- SAS
- APL 2000
- Matlab
- Eviews 6
- SPSS 14 & 16
For further instructions:
visit the ITS Knowledge Base terminal server connection article (requires Pomona login).
Virtual Private Network
VPN is another way Pomona offers for off-campus users wishing to use on-campus computer resources. Virtual Private Network, VPN is a secure network service that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization’s network. Basically, for Pomona College, it allows an off-campus user with high-speed internet access (student, staff or faculty) to act virtually as if his or her machine was on campus. Using VPN, students may access their userspace, network shares, keyserved software, webpages and webservices restricted to campus ip addresses, and they may even connect and print to public campus printers. For instructions visit our VPN setup page.
Other Languages on Your Computer
Windows XP
In Windows XP, you can use many foreign languages with your computer after installing them for use. This will allow you to use different keyboard layouts which can make it easier to enter foreign characters.
Please note:
1. To install East Asian, Thai, and right-to-left languages like Hebrew and Arabic you will need administrator privileges on the computer and a Windows installation CD. If you do not have a Windows installation CD, ITS can help you access the necessary files while you are still at Pomona.
2. If you would also like to install languages for the Microsoft Office 2003 suite, you will need access to either the CDs or the network, depending on where you installed the Office suite from. For off-campus access to the network, see the section on Connecting to On-Campus Resources.
For further instructions:
visit the ITS Knowledge Base article on how to setup the Multilanguage User Interface (MUI) for Windows XP support on your computer (requires Pomona login).
Macintosh OS X
Click on the Apple menu, then System Preferences. Open the International preference pane. You can select which language is used in menus as well as adding additional keyboard layouts.
To use additional languages in Office 2004 programs, pull down the Tools menu, and select Language. You can set the language for an individual document there, or for the entire program by selecting a language and then clicking the “Default” button.
